Charleston area rental home tips:
How to get the best rental value:
- Summer months are high season in the Charleston area area. To find the largest rental within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Choose vacation dates and budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Private Balcony, 2 Living Rooms, 2 Blocks to King! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If not, reach out to the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.
More tips for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- At Check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great time? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
