Charleston area rental booking tips and tricks:

How to get the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. To find the best value, shift your family's Charleston area trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to pick the perfect vacation rental in the Charleston area area:

  • Select a group leader, choose your dates, and select a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. OCEANFRONT FIREFLY POOL ELEVATOR GREAT FOR LARGE FAMILIES has 10 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before reserving the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
  • If there's a particular Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
