Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in Charleston. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Often, management companies supply Charleston area area travel guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Choose your dates and max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Luxury Pied-à-terre in Charleston's French Quarter! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Looking for special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
More tips for your stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To ensure that damages aren't linked to your stay, make note of any problem areas when you arrive. Get in touch with the property manager right away to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
