Rental booking tips:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. To get the largest rental home for your budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Often, management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- First, have your group decide on the best dates and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Large Groups - Downtown Charleston - 13BR\/13BA has 13 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If not, call the host before you book the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
Have a great stay:
- Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many issues.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a great vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
