Tips and Tricks to get the best rental experience:

Finding the best rental value:

  • To find the best rental home for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked very early. Reserving your rental property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Selecting and booking the perfectrental:

  • Start by having your family commit to date ranges and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Historic Downtown Home Steps to King Street has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before you book the home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what is right for your trip.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.

Additional considerations:

  • Store the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Record any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property a final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
