Our top Vacation rental tips:

When to go & When to book:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. To get the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

How to choose and book the bestrental:

  • Select a group leader, choose your dates, and select a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Historic Downtown Home Steps to King Street has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental

Advice for a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
  • Upon arrival, document any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to propel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
