Tips and Tricks to get the best Charleston area rental experience:
Getting the best value:
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. To find the best value, try shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides have money saving offers on nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select vacation week and budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. 'Villa Del Mare' ~ PRIVATE POOL\/HOT TUB, OCEAN VIEWS, ELEV! has 8 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If there's a certain Charleston area beach you love, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or might be applied to your contract.
More considerations:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
- To ensure that damages are not linked to your visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the property manager immediately to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of issues.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic time? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
