Tips to get the perfect Charleston vacation home experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, try changing your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have offers and deals for local tours and attractions.
How to choose and book the bestrental home:
- First and foremost, have your group decide on trip dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. The Rabbit Hole Villa-Charming Villa in Historic District with Free Parking! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area destination you are enamored with, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More considerations for your visit:
- Store the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you are away. Protect your property!
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be respectful. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
