Tips and Tricks to get the best Charleston vacation home experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Summer is high season in Charleston. To find the best value, try shifting your family's Charleston area vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitors guides which often include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
How to select the perfect rental in Charleston:
- Start by having your group select the best dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Relaxing, boho home, central to many attractions has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before booking the rental. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges may be applied to your invoice.
Have a wonderful stay:
- Add the owner's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Note any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would at home.
- At departure, take a walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to inspire future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
