Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area vacation property experience:

Get the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. To get the best vacation home within your budget, we suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to choose and book your Charleston area rental:

  • Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Oceanfront Villa in Wild Dunes Hot Tub & Community Pool! Great Views! has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the host before you reserve your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your family vacation.
  • At Check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
