Getting the best Charleston vacation property experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours and attractions.

Selecting and booking yourvacation home:

  • Start by having your group choose date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Downtown Historic Home Steps to King St has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking websites. If not, call the property management company before reserving the property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • To make sure damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, note any problem areas upon check in. message the property manager immediately to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your life at home. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good feedback to compel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
