Our top Vacation rental home tips:
Sticking to your rental budget:
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- To find the best vacation home within budget, we recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Charleston area restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property managers frequently offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Make a plan and pick your prefect Charleston area rental:
- To start, have your family commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Contemporary 1-Bedroom Loft in Historic Downtown Charleston + Free Parking! has 1 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible online. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's a specific Charleston area beach you are enamored with, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
During your stay:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few problems.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are assessed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
