Our top Charleston area vacation rental booking tips:

Find your perfect rental:

  • Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. To book the most suitable rental home within your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at Charleston area restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Some owners offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Often, management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guides which include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to choose the best rental home in Charleston:

  • Select a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. (A2) John Bulow House at St. Philip Square has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if there is a dispute.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep the property locked while you're gone! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
  • Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
