Our top Charleston area rental home booking tips and tricks:

How to get the best value:

  • The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Booking your vacation home six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Reserve your rental in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Begin by selecting your the best vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Charming Charleston Craftsman Bungalow has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your family is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the owner's information to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Upon arrival, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to drive future bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
