Our top Charleston rental home booking tips and tricks:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a great way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides have money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning, picking, and booking the right Charleston area vacation home:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Lowcountry Cottage Suite 3 miles from oceanfront and 8 miles to downtown! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before reserving the property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what is optimal for your vacation.
- Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your stay:
- Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent resource to find the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a wonderful time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
