Capers Island Marsh Clean-up with SC Aquarium- w/Chilli and Oyster Roast on the beach

We will depart from the Isle of Palms Marina and head up the intracoastal waterway to Capers Island State Heritage Preserve, guided by a naturalist who will entertain you with their knowledge about the ecosystem and wildlife encountered along the way. We will focus our hour-long cleanup on the shell banks and hammock islands where litter washes up during higher tides. Following our cleanup, we will head to Capers Island for a Lowcountry boil, A.K.A. Frogmore Stew, full of fresh local shrimp, potatoes, smoked sausage, onions and corn prepared on the beach. Our return cruise will be timed with the sunset over the salt marsh!

What to wear/bring: Wear long pants and lace down shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting a little muddy. Bring a reusable water bottle and anything else you would like to drink or eat (you are welcome to bring a small cooler or put your drinks in our iced cooler).

There are many beach sweeps but rarely do the shell banks and marsh hammocks get this kind of attention. This will be an amazing opportunity to remove pollution from this fragile ecosystem and contribute to our understanding of what is littering our waterways! We greatly appreciate your help. Proceeds from the event will support the South Carolina Aquarium’s conservation work.
