Our top Charleston rental property booking tips:
When to visit & When to reserve a Charleston area rental home:
- Book your Charleston area vacation in the Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- The sooner your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Make a plan and choose your Charleston area rental:
- Begin by choosing trip dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Trendy Downtown Home With Backyard Oasis Great for Groups has 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you reserve the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your stay:
- Put the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Document any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
