Tips and Tricks to get the optimal rental experience:

Getting the best value:

  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Reserving your vacation home six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Some owners offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines have discounts for local tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First, have your group select a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Island Retreat - Great for Large Groups has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the host before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, record any problem areas upon check in. Contact the rental manager right away to record your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
