How to find the best vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Charleston area area. Booking in Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guides which will include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Begin by choosing vacation dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. (M3) Emma McCall at St. Philip Square has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before booking your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what is optimal for your vacation.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

Tips for your stay:

  • Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • At Check-in, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a great time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
