Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation rental experience:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner you can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Book your Charleston area rental property in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain deals for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Start by having your group commit to the best dates and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Blue Cottage
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available online. Otherwise, contact the property management company before you book the property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish what is right for your vacation group.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

During your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your visit, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Call the host immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
